The Jean Monnet Chair in EU External Action aims to study and critically reflect on the role played by the EU in international relations. The Project was selected for EU co-funding in July 2016. Out of the 737 applications, 147 were selected for funding for this action in the European Union. The holder of the Chair is Professor Juan Santos Vara.
The Jean Monnet Chair will reinforce European studies at the University of Salamanca by strengthening the teaching and research activities that have been developed over the course of past years in the field of EU external action and which have consolidated our University as one of the most advanced Spanish research centres in the field of European studies. At the same time, the Chair will serve to improve the knowledge on the challenges faced by the EU in international relations by a vast number of professionals coming from Latin America.
To implement these aims the project combines teaching and research activities. At the begining of each semester, guest lectures, workshops and roundtable debates will be organised, with the participation of the best Spanish and European academics in the field of the external relations and experts from Council, EEAS, Commission and European Parliament. Two international conferences will be organized focused on key issues in the field of external relations: the external dimension of migration and asylum (2017) and the democratic control and EU external action (2018).
Since the University will celebrate in 2018 its eighth centenary many international conferences and events will take place in Salamanca. The combination of the activities organized by the Chair in conjunction with this historical event will produce a genuinely important multiplying effect to the promotion of European Studies at national and international levels.
